Chapter Five

As Julie and Steven sat in the hospital’s waiting room, she couldn’t help but feel nervous. She had so much going through her head that she couldn’t even concentrate. They had just gone in for Steven’s fertility test and were now waiting for the test results. She looked at him and took his hand in hers. Somehow, she was more nervous about his results than she thought possible and without knowing it, she was squeezing Steven’s hand. He looked at her and brushed off a strand of her hair.

“You okay?” he asked.

She nodded and tried to force a smile but it was not happening.

“I’m just really…” she exhaled loudly and looked at him. “What if I’m the problem?” she asked as she looked at him. He kissed her forehead and put an arm around her shoulders.

“It could very well be me and even if it is, I already told you that it doesn’t matter to me. I love you and if we can’t have kids then we’ll adopt,” he said.

She nodded and leaned her head against his chest. After what seemed like forever, the doctor came out and called them in. Suddenly, Julie’s heart rate was through the roof. She looked at Steven and then slowly walked in after him.

“So, doctor. What seems to be the problem?” Steven asked as he looked at the doctor who looked up at him and smiled.

“Actually, there is nothing wrong. Your swimmers are strong and abundant,” he said. Steven smiled and then looked at Julie. “We are talking…” he paused and looked at the file. “Eighty million per milliliter,” he said.

“That much?” Julie asked, surprised.

“Actually, that’s pretty okay. A healthy male has twenty to 120 million sperm per milliliter on average. So eighty is pretty darn good,” the doctor said. Julie looked at Steven and smiled sadly. It was just downing on her. She could very well be the problem. She could be the reason why Steven could never be a father. She suddenly stood up and excused herself walking out of the office too fast for either of the two men to say anything. Steven looked at the doctor and then at the door. “It’s alright. Go,” the doctor said. Steven practically ran out of the office and then out to the main reception area but Julie was not there. He looked at the nurse seated behind the reception desk.

“Hey, did you see a woman come by here a few minutes ago about yay tall in a black and white dress…” he started before the nurse pointed at the exit. He mumbled his thanks and ran out of the hospital to the parking lot where he found Julie falling apart. He stood there looking at her as she struggled to breathe and cry at the same time. He hated seeing her like this. “Baby…no,” he said in a low voice as he walked towards her. “We talked about this,” he said in a whisper as he held her in his arms.

“I’m sorry…I’m so sorry baby…” she sobbed into his shoulder.
